PAUSE EXERCISES Did you know that one of the most important factors in determining the likelihood of a person sustaining a back injury is the status of the person's abdominal & leg strength? When a person sees a piece of paper on the ground for example, the way in which the person will automatically pick it up (under normal circumstances the person would not consciously think about how to move his/her body) would depend on; a) Memory of how they have done it before, and b) The strength of their abdominals & legs. If their legs are weak, they will bend through the spine. If leg & core strength is good, the person is much more likely to bend the knees either partially or into a full squat. Strengthening the core & thigh muscles is also a good preventative measure for avoiding back & knee soreness which is often secondary to weakness / instability. The assumption of repetitive & sustained postures at work may result in muscle & ligament imbalance, which can lead to sprains & strains. Safe Work Practice has formulated a safe, sustainable & simple, yet effective regime of stretching, & strengthening exercises that all staff can undertake throughout their working day.
